A Life Started Running from Debt

It is pretty well known at this point in time that Edgar Allen Poe is known to have been a drunk, who has fled from debts and accumulated a lot of debt in his life. I do not know about you, but when I owe someone money that thought is the back of my head all day long and that in itself is stressful. I could not imagine the thought having to assume a fake name and enlisting the army just to escape some of these debts. To show the affect this could have had on Poe in today's world I looked at I study done looking on how much debt a college student personally has affects their health. The study showed that students that where in $1000 or more credit card debt at the time where at risk of almost all the indicators tested, including drug use and binge drinking. (Nelson 401) There are other factors that could have played into Poe's sad ending, but it can be seen that stress from his debts during his life could have been a factor contributing to his alcoholism.
