It can be seen in many of Poe's works his narrators can be found to be very unreliable. Most of the time they are clearly just insane or going through a moment of insanity. From one short story from class "The Cask of Amontillado" Montresor is the perfect example of one Poe's most unreliable narrators. In an article "Method to Madness" by Patrick Mcgrath, Poe "having drawn us into Montersor's paranoia with his very first sentence, Poe will not let us escape." Like poor Fortunato, we are too walled up in a suffocating structure from which only death- or the end of the story can release us." Poe basically traps the reader into a whirlpool of crazy that most people can not imagine. Many of Poe' works clearly contain this theme in them. People are fascinated to attempt to understand how these stories play out because it is a rare opportunity to be in the head of person crazy enough to murder someone over an insult and in a gruesome fashion. This brings me to the bigger question where most of Poe's characters unreliable because he was an unreliable person.
